8 Week Course Structure
 Week 1

•    Introduction to health and safety and the basic rules of Tiling.
•    Getting to know your tool kit and how each tool should be used.
•    Information on how to prepare surfaces for tiling
•    How to used and apply grouts and adhesives.
•    Manual and machine tile cutting techniques.
•    4 metre squared levelling exercise
•    First full installation of tiles, adhesive, trim and grout over multiple vertical and horizontal surfaces
•    Estimating materials and costs
•    Learn to measure, mark and cut around sockets/plugs and pipes.

Week 2

•    Learn to tile a 3-sided cubicle with a boarder feature.
•    Gain the skills to tile around specific objects.
•    Re-tile a kitchen using self-levelling compounds enabling you to practice preparation of surfaces to be tiled.
•    Cutting and tiling around circular obstacles and windows
•    Watch demonstrations from the market leaders (BAL and PCI) on adhesives and related products.
•    Use a variety of tiles in different sizes.

Weeks 3 and 4

•    Gain further experience in advanced cutting techniques and advanced setting techniques, levelling exercises and under floor heating installation.
•    Tile a shop front set up
•    Learn to set out and tile a full bathroom after completing an estimate for the project.
•    Partake in a business start up seminar on how to start your own business, advertising and marketing, how to obtain work and the legal responsibilities that face a self-employed tradesperson.

Weeks 5 and 6

•    Back to basics with floor installations using porcelain and natural stone tiles to industry tolerances and onto specialised floor designs including a random patter floor
•    Victorian pathways, showers and falls and steps and risers.

Weeks 7 and 8

•    A complete installation of under floor heating, latex/levelling compound and tiles.  You will need to calculate costs for all materials used and ensure all materials that are chosen are suitable for the full installation.
•    You will cover natural stone products including slate, terracotta and limestone.


Novice tillers on completion of a full course have been able to set up successful businesses from the skills they have learnt and the effort they put into their studies. Ceramics is the basis of all tiling. If you can set out and install ceramic tiles then you can install all the materials with the label “tiles”.
